“Like an eagle tending his nest” (Dt.32:11)—

take your typical eagle, for example.

He will not enter his nest [with food]

without first arousing his nestlings with his wings—

whether between one tree and another,

or between one bush and another—

in order to alert them,

and to give them the strength to receive his weight.

 

So, too, when the Blessed Holy One

disclosed [Himself] to impart Torah to Israel,

he didn’t disclose [Himself] to them from one direction.

Rather, He disclosed [Himself] from four directions, as it is said:

“HASHEM is to come from Sinai” (Dt.33:2);

“And will rise upon them from Se’ir” (Dt.33:2);

“And will appear from Mt. Paran” (Dt.33:2);

So what is the fourth direction?

“God will come from Teman” (Hab.3:3).2

“He shall spread His wings to take him” (Dt.32:11).

Accordingly, it is said:

“And in the wasteland,

as you saw how HASHEM your God carried you” (Dt.1:31).

“He will bear him upon his limbs” (Dt.32:11).

Accordingly, it is stated:

“And I carried you on eagles’ wings” (Ex.19:4).

Another word:

this [refers to] the future,

as it is said:
“The voice of my lover, indeed, is approaching” (Song2:8)

“He shall spread His wings to take him” (Dt.32:11).

Accordingly, it is said:

“I will say to the north—give up! And to the south—do not withhold!

Bring My sons from afar and My daughters from the ends of the earth” (Is.43:6).

“He will bear him upon his limbs” (Dt.32:11).

Accordingly, it is stated:

“And they shall bring your sons in their bosoms” (Is.49:22).
