“An inheritance he shall not have” (Dt.18:2)—

within the inheritance of the three

[trans-Jordanian tribes, Gad, Reuben, and Manasseh].

“In the midst of his brothers” (Dt.18:2)—

nor within the inheritance of the five

[Canaanite nations, the Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites,

Hivites, and Jebusites (e.g. Dt.20:17)].

“HASHEM is his inheritance, as He has promised him” (Dt.18:2)—

this explains the rationale behind

[Levite landlessness].²
