DESCRIPTION:Join us for a public lecture with Ethan Katz in HUB 145 from 4:00-5:30pm on October 19th\, 2027. More details coming soon! Please register here. \nEthan Katz is Associate Professor of History at UC-Berkeley\, where is also the Helen Diller Family Faculty Director of the Center for Jewish Studies. Katz’s first book\, The Burdens of Brotherhood: Jews and Muslims from North Africa to France (Harvard\, 2015)\, received several prizes\, including a National Jewish Book Award. Katz has co-edited three other books\, including Colonialism and the Jews\, a finalist for a National Jewish Book Award. His newest book\, currently entitled Unsettling Histories: Zionism and Colonialism Reconsidered is under contract with Princeton University Press. Katz has taken a major leadership role in discussions of antisemitism and Israel/Palestine on college campuses. He is the co-founder of two pioneering programs at Berkeley: (1) the Antisemitism Education Initiative\, a program to improve the conversation about antisemitism through thoughtful education and engagement; and (2) The Berkeley Bridging Fellowship\, a year-long program that brings together diverse students for discussions about Israel and Palestine. His research has been supported by numerous fellowships\, including from the Katz Center for Advanced Judaic Studies at the University of Pennsylvania and the Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Antisemitism\, at the Hebrew University. \n

SUMMARY:Ladino Day 2027 | The Seattle Sephardic Bookshelf: A Glimpse into the Adatto Family Collection
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the University of Washington since 2013\, Ladino Day is an annual educational and celebratory program that centers the Ladino (Judeo-Spanish) language through story and song\, and with lectures and reflections from scholars\, activists\, and community members. \n\nFor Ladino Day 2027\, join us on a curated tour through the Adatto collection – in both digital and physical form – with presentations by Sephardic Studies chair Devin Naar and other special guests. \nThe first scholars of Sephardic Studies at the University of Washington–and among the very first scholars in the field anywhere in the United States–siblings Albert and Emma Adatto completed their masters degrees in the 1930s focusing on Seattle Sephardic history and culture\, respectively. Since then\, Albert Adatto amassed one of the largest private collections of Ladino books from the Ottoman Empire located anywhere in the United States. Now digitized by the UW Sephardic Studies Program with the originals housed at UW Special Collections\, the Adatto bookshelf offers an unprecedented glimpse into the astounding literary and cultural creativity among Sephardic Jews over the centuries that has been hidden from public view until today. \nThis event will be held in-person on the 5th floor of the Suzzallo Library or online on Zoom. Registration links will be posted soon.  \n\nThis event is hosted by the Sephardic Studies Program and the Stroum Center for Jewish Studies at the University of Washington\, made possible by the Lucie Benveniste Kavesh Endowed Fund for Sephardic Studies.
