The Enlightenment defined the course of modern Jewish philosophy. This class offers critical reading and discussion of key philosophical texts by such thinkers as Baruch Spinoza, Moses Mendelssohn, Hermann Cohen, Karl Marx, Theodor Herzl, and Martin Buber. Students will track the historical trajectory of Jewish thought through to the rise of Nazism, when the very possibility of Jewish philosophy was confronted by the specter of annihilation.
