Sephardic Jews refer to Jews of Spain, Portugal, North Africa and the Middle East and their descendants. In this course, students will develop a basic understanding of relevant Sephardic Jewish cultural traditions (art, music, food, film, and literature) before their expulsion from Spain in 1492. The course will also treat issues related to Sephardic Jews’ identity, citizenship and nationhood, and explore the origins of Ladino (Judeo-Spanish).
Note: This course is taught in English. Non-Spanish majors complete assignments in English. An add code is required for non-Spanish majors; contact Lauren Kurland for the code.
