Translation of Albert Levy’s piece about the “land of opportunities” for the Salonica newspaper El Liberal. Translated by Ashley Bobman.
La Amerika es paiz de oportunidad,
ninguno puede niegar esta verdad;
la Amerika ofre a todos los sivdadenos
avantadjes en todos sus kaminos.
Aki en Amerika, por azer sukseso,
kale despyegar asforso imenso,
kale lavorar mientres toda la vida,
por alkansar la reushida.
La Amerika, es un paiz de maravia,
al ke vimos prove un dia,
lo vimos despues breliando,
i el sukseso alkansando.
Un otro, ke era ayer potente,
no tuviendo minister de ninguna djente;
lo vimos supito en la mezeria,
i se va en vano toda su lazoria.
En este paiz, ninguno puede vantarse,
mizmo riko, a la kama echarse;
una kayida basta por aflakarlo,
i en la mizeria ronjarlo,
es un paiz loko, no bazado,
uno kaye, otro es lavantado;
uno abasha, otro suve dekontino,
kuantunke no lo tenia en tino.
Ningun ombre puede estar siguro,
kualo le rezerva el futuro;
es por esto ke kale siempre lavorar,
lavorar dia i noche, sin repozar.
La eskalera dela vida es grandioza,
ay kien la suve de una manera presoroza,
ay kien la suve paso a paso,
i enkontra mil i un embaraso.
Ay ombres ke suven munchos eskalones,
kon muncho koradje, komo los liones;
ay otros ke no tienen la fuersa,
malgrado sus ambision imensa.
I despues ay el selo ke pusha,
i a kualonke ombre arempusha;
a suvir los eskalones dela vida,
unikamente por alkansar la reushida.
Ay ombres ke se dan tanta presura,
por suvir ala altura;
ma, supito kayen sin saver,
i se topan en el aver.
Es por esto, ke kale tener pasiensia,
suvir la eskalera kon konsensia;
suvirla alora grado a grado,
para bivir algo repozado!
El ke lavora siguramente alkansa,
el ke no produize tiene mankansa;
el ke pensa al dia de manyana,
topa la vida mas livyana.
No kale tener embedia dela djente,
no kale bivir tambien indiferente;
kada uno deve ozar abilidad,
en este paiz dela oportunidad.
Lavoro, intelijensa i ekonomia,
deve mostrar kada kapo de famia,
son los 3 elementos ministerozos,
para pueder bivir prosperozos!
Aki, kale bivir siempre kon esperansa,
el ke kere bivir, nunka se kansa,
el ke dezia bivir kon ulgora,
deve mostrar siempre bravora.
Por no kedar siempre esklavo,
el ombre deve ser korajozo i bravo;
el koraje, es de grande nesesidad,
para alkansar la prosperidad!
No kale kedar kon las manos apligadas,
no kale deshar las agilas akantonadas;
ay menester saver investarlas,
i de mas en mas, pujarlas!
Kale azer kolonke modo de tantativa,
despegar kolonke enerjia biva;
lavorar kon el solo buto,
de alkansar el dezido fruto!
El plieto por la vida es minestirozo,
para render a el ombre orozo;
kale saver yevarlo kon kontensia,
kon el lavoro, ekonomia i pasensia!

America is the land of opportunity,
no one can deny this truth;
America offers all citizens
advantages in all their undertakings.
Here in America, in order to have success,
one must exert immense effort,
one must work during their entire life,
to obtain success.
America is a place of wonder,
someone we saw poor one day,
we saw him after shinning
and reaching success.
Another that was strong yesterday
not having need of any people,
we see him suddenly in misery,
and in vain he falls into poverty.
In this land, no one can boast
not even a rich person, at the end of the day; one fall suffices to weaken him
and in misery throws him;
In a crazy land, without structure,
one falls, another rises,
one goes down, another goes up continuously, even if he didn’t intend to.
No man can be sure
what the future holds.
It is for this reason that he must always work
to work day and night, without rest.
The ladder of life is great,
there are those who climb it in a hasty manner, there are those who climb it step by step, and encounter a thousand and one obstacles.
There are men that climb many steps
with much courage, like the lions;
there are others that have no strength,
despite their immense ambitions.
And after there is jealousy that pushes
and to whichever man pushes forcefully
to go up the steps of life
only to achieve success.
There are men that make too much haste
in order to elevate in status,
but suddenly fall without knowing
and find themselves in the air [out of luck].
Therefore, they must have patience
to climb up the steps mindfully,
thus to rise up step by step,
in order to live peacefully!
He who works certainly succeeds,
he who produces nothing is lacking;
he who thinks of the day tomorrow
encounters an easier life.
One must not be envious of people,
one must not live indifferently also,
each must use skill
in this country of opportunity.
Work, intelligence, and economy,
each head of household must display these; they are the three necessary elements
to live prosperously!
Here, one must always live with hope,
he who wishes to live, never tires
he who desires to live with ease
should always display bravery.
In order to not remain forever a slave
the man should act with courage and bravery, courage is a great necessity
in order to obtain prosperity!
One must not sit there with their hands crossed, one must not abandon the eagles;
it is necessary to know how to invest in them, and nurture them more and more.
One must attempt any mode
to exert any living energy
to work with one goal
reaching the desired fruit!
Litigation for life is necessary
to render a man happy;
one must know to take it with content
with the work, economy, and patience.
