How have Modern Hebrew writers drawn on the Bible while creating new responses to and interpretations of Jewish experience?
This course presents selections of twentieth century poetry that re-imagines figures such as Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, Abraham, Isaac, Sarah, Rachel, Leah, and King Saul. Through their ongoing dialogue and quarrels with scripture, modern poets have created a dynamic poetry that brings the Bible to life.
Prerequisite: MODHEB 203 (formerly HEBR 423) or permission of instructor.
Assignments: 3 compositions in Hebrew, a final exam, and several short essays in English
