About the Course:
The course introduces students to classic studies about American Jewish identity. But the heart of the course involves the student in researching first-hand the diverse Jewish identities of today. We ask what is it that sustains Jewish identification in America (a shared culture, values, ancestry, faith, observance and practice, a concern to repair the world, etc.)– and whether the touchstones of Jewish identity are changing.

Course Goal:
To equip students with the methodological tools (oral history, ethnographic interviewing, and fieldwork) for doing and presenting their own original research on new Jewish identities during the term.
