Jewish Art course

Are the Jews an “artless” people? Explore major visual monuments in Jewish culture from Late Antiquity to the modern era. Topics include biblical attitudes to the visual, synagogue architecture, illuminated Hebrew manuscripts in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, the illustrated printed Hebrew book, Jewish objects for the home, and the emergence of modern Jewish art. Students will gain an understanding of the differences between various Jewish communities in Christian Europe and the Islamic East.
