Does prayer happen differently in a synagogue and a mosque?

An exciting new course offering from the UW NELC department offers students a rare chance to answer that question by studying Jewish and Islamic prayers side by side. Prayer and Poetry in the Jewish and Islamic Traditions (NEAR E 320/520) will be co-taught by Prof. Naomi Sokoloff and Prof. Samad Alavi. Students will have the opportunity to study the meaning of prayers from both faith traditions. In addition, they will read modern poetry that draws on prayer as a source of inspiration.
